STAR Form 1, 2 and 3 Classes
About STAR
STAR started in the 2022 school year and was inspired by the principles of Charlotte Mason. At STAR, our students sing hymns, recite memory work, listen to poetry, observe great art, drink tea, hear classical music, go on nature walks, learn more about the Bible, do art and science projects, and have a show & tell time. We meet for twenty-eight weeks, beginning at the end of August and ending in April or the beginning of May, with holiday breaks in between weeks.
The Forms
Our students are divided into Forms, and after hymns and announcements, they follow tutors to class. The Forms are divided as follows:
Form 1: pre-K (4 years old) to first grade
Form 2: second to third grade
Form 3: fourth through sixth grade
Form 4: 7th-8th grade
Form 5: 9th-12th grade
The Day and the Format
In the past, STAR has met on Wednesdays, and we have paid tutors to teach the classes. In the future, we plan to have moms teach a portion of the STAR day and rotate their position every seven weeks.
The Curriculum
STAR Homeschool Community uses reading plans from The Gentle Learning Company. In the 2024-2025 school year, families will be following the Cycle 4 reading plans (Modern history). We will be in Cycle 1 (Ancient history) in the 2025-2026 school year.
The GLC reading plans follow the Claritas Publishing memory work guides.
The Homework
Students in Form 1 only have the following homework:
- Practice the memory work at home
Students in Forms 2 and 3 practice the memory work at home and have one additional piece of homework:
- Read the assigned chapter book (either independently, or as a read aloud with mom)
Also, our Form 3 students may take an afternoon class that includes homework assignments:
- Grammar, Writing and Math Games
The Babies and Toddlers
We typically have a nursery for siblings who are not old enough to attend STAR classes. In the 2025-2026 school year, moms will work in the nursery, on a rotation.
The Moms
Moms stay on site with their children for Forms 1-3, and there are no exceptions to this. All moms will be helping in the community in some way.
The Community
STAR is typically a pretty close community. We hope that you will feel at home at STAR and make lots of good friends!
The Requirements
All STAR families need to sign our Statement of Faith, our Mission Statement, and our Rules and Expectations. After application, each family will have a family interview with the director and/or a board member.
